Walter J.P. Curley is a graduate of Yale and Harvard universities, and the former US Ambassador to Ireland and France. He is the author of Letters from the Pacific and Monarchs in Waiting: The Descendants of Europe's Royal Families. He divides his time between Manhattan and Newport, County Mayo. Ambassador Curley has corresponded with and interviewed these present day chieftans and their families, often in their own surroundings, sometimes at hereditary castles that date back a thousand years and more. He has masterfully merged the historical sagas of Irelnd's major Gaelic royal families with the lives and thoughts of their direct descendants today.

The artist Gordon Wetmore is chairman of the Portrait Society of America, and lives on Signal Mountain, Tennessee with a studio in Chattanooga. He has painted portraits of some of the world's most famous people and has been the artist for several books, including Promised Land, Gordon Wetmore's Prayers for Boys and Girls, and Ireland-Portrayed by Gordon Wetmore, with a forward by the late Princess Grace of Monaco. Through careful research and with life sittings in many of their homes, he has captured the remarkable charactor of these indominatable people in a gallery of paintings and sketches presented here along with the text and photographs.
